The present paper reports the first observation of a vesicle to wormli
ke micelle transition in the surfactant cetyltrimethyl ammonium 3-hydr
oxynaphthalene-2-carboxylate induced by shear. The structural aspects
investigated by small angle neutron scattering indicate that the trans
ition induced by shear, temperature, and added surfactant present simi
lar aspects. Step-shear experiments indicate the presence of other she
ar-induced transitions with very long characteristic times.
