To establish a design method for an economically optimum shaped transf
ormer for a switching power supply, the dimensions, capacity, and pric
e of a transformer are studied taking into account iron loss, copper l
oss, cooling condition, and limited temperature rise as design paramet
ers. It is found that the economical shape of the transformer designed
by the proposed method has a longer window and a much shallower depth
than conventionally designed ones. Design parameters for a simple des
ign of an optimum transformer were discovered during the research proc
ess; a simple design method based on these parameters is introduced he
