Transaction processing systems (TPS) applications are a large componen
t of most business organizations' investment in computer technology. H
eterogeneous and distributed computing environments have become essent
ial and beneficial to most corporations. Thus, there is a need for too
ls to support the development of new distributed TPSs and the migratio
n of existing TPSs to distributed environments. This paper presents th
e design and construction of a software tool that provides the functio
nalities necessary for the construction, operation and management of h
eterogenous distributed TPS applications. The tool design is based on
object-orientation and real-time control and is implemented using Prol
og and C. We anticipate that the tool will provide practical and signi
ficant benefits to the operators and maintainers of large-scale TPSs.
