The possibility of integrating three therapeutic modalities (psychodyn
amic, cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT), and systems) by examining thre
e formulations of the same case is considered. To this effect, the thr
ee formulations are contrasted along two analytical perspectives conte
nt vs. process, as the phenomenological analysis of distinctions vs. t
he formal relational structure of the process. The three phenomenologi
cal models (along the dichotomies of conscious vs. unconscious, ration
al vs. irrational and meaning vs. meaninglessness), explored along the
four criteria of Millon's integrative paradigms (epistemology, diagno
stic categories assessment techniques, therapeutic interventions), are
viewed as irreconcilable By contrast the parallel formal process anal
ysis of samples of the three therapies allows the integration of the t
hree therapies by identifying a six-role state conflict resolution pro
cess as their common denominator. This model is explored in the case a
t hand as providing relational diagnostic distinctions on the basis of
which consensus could be established by the representatives of the th
ree models. It is presumed that this reconciliation could enhance the
three therapeutic interventions as complementary in reinforcing confli
ct resolution as their common objective.
