Using a new method of data processing in the investigation of interfer
ence correlations of identical particles, a direct proof of nonstation
arity of the pi(-) production volume in central Mg-Mg collisions at a
beam momentum of p(lab) = 4.4 GeV/c per nucleon was obtained. The velo
city of a source of correlated pi(-) meson pairs is introduced as a fr
ee parameter in the Lorentz transformed approximation formula of the i
nterference peak. This velocity increases with increasing the velocity
of a subset of pi(-) mesons which are chosen for the interference ana
lysis. The source velocity is the new experimentally measurable physic
al variable of interference analysis, apart from space-time sizes of t
he source. (C) 1997 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.
