Uranium and thorium contents in different building material samples ha
ve been evaluated by using a method based on combining the solid state
nuclear track detector (SSNTD) technique with a calculational method.
A new method has been developed based on calculating the stopping pow
ers of the studied materials for the alpha-particles emitted by the ur
anium and thorium series and exploiting the uranium and thorium conten
ts of the studied materials for evaluating the corresponding global al
pha doses. The emanation coefficient for radon in the building materia
ls studied has been determined. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
