Abstract
Following the study of the arc structure of singularities, initiated b y J. Nash, we give criteria for the existence of smooth curves on a su rface singularity (S, O) and of smooth branches of its generic hyperpl ane section. A natural partition of the set of smooth curves on (S, O) into families as well as a description of each one of them by means o f chains of infinitely near points and their associated maximal cycle follow from these criteria.
