Abstract
Temperature dependence of work function change (Delta phi) caused by a dsorption of Cu on W(110) at very low coverages is examined. The pheno menon reported by Kolaczkiewicz and Bauer is explained by mutual depol arisation of nearest neighbours during formation of two-dimensional is lands in the adlayer. If is assumed that Cu adatoms are polarisable an d neutral. The work function change is taken to be equal to dipole pot ential barrier produced by the induced dipole moments of adatoms. Chan ges in arrangement of adatoms accompanying the formation of the island s are modelled by Monte Carlo simulations, using the continuous space model of submonolayer with a realistic intermolecular potential given by Gollisch.
