Abstract
Iron/ascorbate-induced lipid peroxidation, as measured by the increase in thiobarbituric acid reactive substances in rat liver microsomes, w as markedly inhibited by melatonin at 0.1 to 0.5 mM, and slightly redu ced by alpha-glycollic acid at a concentration as high as 1.0 mM. Comb inations of melatonin with glycollic acid in a 1:2 to 1:10 molar ratio resulted in an effect greater than the sum of the individual inhibiti ons, providing evidence for synergistic interactions.
