Results of a theoretical and an experimental study of the process of g
eneration of tsunamis by vertical floor motions with and without resid
ual displacements are given. The results obtained analytically within
the linear potential wave theory were compared to data of a laboratory
simulation performed in a canal 3.3 m long, 0.15 m deep, and 0.15 m w
ide. An original infrared gage was used to record the waves.
