Abstract
A multilevel finite element mesh superposition technique aimed at hier archically improving the quality of numerical solutions and mathematic al models for a certain class of problems is developed. A posteriori e rror estimates, adaptive mesh overlay schemes, iterative solution proc edures, data structures, and numerical experiments are described in th e context of linear elastostatics.
