Steptococcus suis type 2 (group R streptococcus) was isolated from cer
ebrospinal fluid in a 64-year old farmer who raised pigs on his farm.
High dosage penicillin G and ceftriaxone treatment terminated the infe
ction and all neurological signs disappeared completely. Since many la
boratories are not aware of this streptococcus - the disease is rare i
n man - and given the particular nature of this agent, it may be prima
rily misidentified as enterococcus or pneumococcus. Exposure to pigs,
especially an occupational history, may lead the microbiologist to sus
pect streptococcus suis.
