The semiclassical scattering amplitude is directly derived from the qu
antum mechanical S-matrix in the momentum representation. No informati
on about the asymptotic form of the scattering wavefunction is require
d, which is particularly important for Coulomb problems. We apply the
formalism to the scattering of two identical Coulomb particles and pro
ve analytically that the semiclassical result is exact. It does not de
pend on a particular representation. However, its exactness can be att
ributed to the existence of a representation in which the quantum and
the semiclassical propagator are identical.
