Proteoglycans were studied histochemically and immuno-histochemically
in normal and osteochondrotic cartilage of swine. The results showed r
educed intensities of proteoglycan staining with cationic dyes in oste
ochondrotic necrotic cartilage. Staining intensities with monoclonal a
ntibodies specific to chondroitin sulfate, keratan sulfate and decorin
varied among joints. These results do not support recent reports demo
nstrating high staining intensity of proteoglycan in necrotic cartilag
