Several new Plio-Pleistocene archaeological sites have been discovered
on the west side of the northern half of Lake Turkana. Those sites ar
e well stratified within the Nachukui Formation, already known for the
discovery of several important hominid specimens. The discovery and t
he age of these locations expand the inventory of sites in the Turkana
Basin dated prior to and after 2 Ma. More important is the fact that
it is the first time a sequence spreading from 2.4 Ma to about 0.7 Ma
has been discovered in one region with a substantial number of archaeo
logical sites.
