3 mol% Y2O3-stabilized Tetragonal Zirconia Polycrystals (Y-TZP) reinfo
rced with 15% vol. Al2O3 platelets have been deformed in compression a
t constant strain rates between 10(-5) and 2 x 10(-3) s(-1) and temper
atures between 1250 and 1400 degrees C. The composites have been found
to behave in a similar way to monolithic Y-TZP. The strain rate contr
olling mechanism is characterized by a stress exponent n of 2, the def
ormation being achieved by grain boundary sliding. No increase in the
creep resistance due to platelet-reinforcement was found because of th
e high ductility of the zirconia matrix.
