The efficiency of the S(RN)1 reaction is traced to the energy level of
the radical anion of the substitution product: appropriate structural
effects, by stabilizing the radical anion, lower its energy and incre
ase the rate of the process. A quantitative investigation of these eff
ects is attempted.
