Addition of unsubstituted and substituted benzenesulfinic acids to bet
a-nitrostyrene has been studied kinetically by means of ultraviolet sp
ectrophotometry. The reaction follows the second-order kinetics: nu =
k. [beta-nitrostyrene][sulfinic acid]. The dependence of rate constant
s on the temperature and influence of p-substituents on the kinetic pa
rameters have been investigated. The activating energy and the enthalp
y of activation are calculated in the temperature range 288-308 K.
