Staphylococcal infections have been frequently reported in patients wi
th advancing HIV disease. The authors report herein an unusual case of
botryomycosis in a patient with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (A
IDS). The clinical findings were painful, populo-nodular lesions of th
e scalp, trunk and extremities chronic folliculitis or prurigo-nodular
is and an abscess on the right gluteus. Staphylococcus aureus was isol
ated as the etiologic agent. The histopathologic evidence of suppurati
ve foci containing the key to the diagnosis of botryomycosis. The pati
ent's neutrophil phagocytosis test was slightly reduced. Antimicrobial
therapy improved most of the cutaneous lesions and surgical excision
was performed for the resistant one.
