The dynamics of the Lorenz model of general circulation of the atmosph
ere is investigated. Tile attractors found are characterized by calcul
ating their Fourier spectra, Lyapunov exponents and dimensions. In add
ition, the self similarity of the attractors is studied with the aid o
f a Poincare map. A series of one-dimensional maps derived from the Po
incare section illustrates tile structural changes of the attractors a
s a function of parameters variations.
