A theoretical relationship which expresses an oscillation frequency sh
ift of an AT cut quartz resonator caused by adhesion of spherical part
icles in a liquid is derived in terms of material parameters of the li
quid and the quartz. The relationship is composed of two terms; one is
related to a fluid-mechanical drag, and the other is related to a for
eign mass attachment which is expressed by the intrinsically same form
as Sauerbrey's formula. The latter contribution to the shift is much
smaller than the former one. The theoretical equation has well agreed
with the experimental data.
