A set of CsI(pure) crystals have been tested for use as an electromagn
etic calorimeter for pi(o) detection in photonuclear reactions at phot
on energies below 1.2 GeV. Performances of the calorimeter including e
nergy and position resolution are studied by using the electron and ta
gged-photon beams at the INS-Tokyo electron synchrotron. In the first
experiment for the nuclear coherent pi(o) photoproduction carried out
at INS, a pi(o) mass resolution of 7 MeV (rms) has been obtained in th
e pi(o) energy region between 0.5 and 1.0 GeV.
