Abstract
Over the last years design principles and quality requirements for pro grammable systems with safety related functions for protection of huma n life and plant equipment for various fields of application were work ed out in national and international regulations, guidelines and opera ting instructions. The paper presents an overview of the achieved stat us and the future trends. Additionally the type approval, certificatio n and licensing (application dependent) will be included.
