An epignathus was found by routine screening ultrasound examination in
the 17th week of pregnancy. Epignathi are teratomas in the oral cavit
y and are rarely found. The detection of an epignathus in the first ha
lf of pregnancy was described only three times in literature. The tera
toma may also invade the cerebrum and is associated with a polyhydramn
ios and elevated alphafetoprotein. If the diagnosis is made in the fir
st half of pregnancy a induced abortion is to be discussed.
