S. Yamaguchi et al., PERSONALITY-CORRELATES OF ALLOCENTRIC TENDENCIES IN INDIVIDUALIST ANDCOLLECTIVIST CULTURES, Journal of cross-cultural psychology, 26(6), 1995, pp. 658-672
The present study examines personality correlates of personal collecti
vism (allocentrism) both in an individualist culture (the United State
s) and in collectivist cultures (Korea and Japan). It was expected tho
se with higher allocentric tendencies would be more concerned with rew
ards and punishments from in-group members and thus have a lower need
for being unique as compared to those with lower allocentric tendencie
s. Undergraduates in the three countries were administered a Collectiv
ism Scale, the Affiliative Tendency and Sensitivity to Rejection Scale
, and the Need for Uniqueness Scale. The results confirmed that alloce
ntric tendencies are associated with higher affiliative tendency, high
er sensitivity to rejection, and lower need for uniqueness in all of t
he three countries. These results support the concurrent validity of t
he Collectivism Scale across cultures.
