Two cases of Wernicke's encephalopathy during pregnancy are reported.
This complication of pregnancy has become rare as a result of improvem
ents in the management of vomiting of pregnancy. Only 16 cases have be
en reported over the last 15 years. However, underdiagnosis probably o
ccurs. Wernicke's. encephalopathy should be considered in patients wit
h ocular motor disorders, ataxia, and confusion, especially when intra
venous glucose solutions are the only source of nutrients. Early admin
istration of thiamines ensures a favorable outcome for the mother and
fetus.
