Mj. Jacobsen et Jp. Nielsen, DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION OF A SELECTIVE AND INDICATIVE MEDIUM FOR ISOLATION OF ACTINOBACILLUS-PLEUROPNEUMONIAE FROM TONSILS, Veterinary microbiology, 47(1-2), 1995, pp. 191-197
In order to isolate ActinobacillIus pleuropneumoniae from mixed bacter
ial flora a selective and indicative medium was developed. The optimal
concentrations of antibiotics were determined for selective chocolate
agar (S-TSA) and selective blood agar (S-MBA) using a set of 25 strai
ns of A. pleuropneumoniae. Following optimization of the media 96 isol
ates of A. pleuropneumonine were tested on S-TSA and S-MBA. For isolat
ion of A. pleuropneumoniae from 101 pig tonsils collected at slaughter
the S-MBA proved significantly better than both S-TSA and the two non
-selective agars tested. Furthermore, contaminating growth by bacteria
other than A. pleuropneumoniae was significantly reduced on S-MBA com
pared to S-TSA and the two non-selective media.
