The variational path-integral method is used to calculate the partitio
n function with an effective potential of a nonlinear open system, whi
ch is described by the system-plus-environment model. The two variatio
nal parameters corresponding to the potential and the coupling form fa
ctor, respectively, in the quadratic trial action are determined by mi
nimizing the effective potential. A general expression for the partiti
on function at finite temperature is obtained.
