C. Frontera et al., SEQUENTIAL PARTITIONING - AN ALTERNATIVE TO UNDERSTANDING SIZE DISTRIBUTIONS OF AVALANCHES IN FIRST-ORDER PHASE-TRANSITIONS, Physical review. E, Statistical physics, plasmas, fluids, and related interdisciplinary topics, 52(5), 1995, pp. 5671-5674
We study the problem of the partition of a system of initial size V in
to a sequence of fragments s(1), s(2), s(3).... By assuming a scaling
hypothesis for the probability p(s; V) of obtaining a fragment of a gi
ven size, we deduce that the final distribution of fragment sizes exhi
bits power-law behavior. This minimal model is useful to understanding
the distribution of avalanche sizes in first-order phase transitions
at low temperatures.
