Abstract
Recent experiments on convection in binary mixtures have shown that th e interaction between localized waves (pulses) can be repulsive as wel l as attractive and depends strongly on the relative orientation of th e pulses. It is demonstrated that the concentration mode, which is cha racteristic of the extended Ginzburg-Landau equations introduced recen tly, allows a natural understanding of that result. Within the standar d complex Ginzburg-Landau equation this would not be possible.
