Pa. Tyler et al., A NEW GENUS OF OPHIUROID (ECHINODERMATA, OPHIUROIDEA) FROM HYDROTHERMAL MOUNDS ALONG THE MID-ATLANTIC RIDGE, Journal of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom, 75(4), 1995, pp. 977-986
Ophioctenella, a new genus of the family Ophiuridae, sub-family Ophiur
inae, is described from specimens collected by submersible expeditions
to hydrothermal vents along the mid-Atlantic Ridge. This is the first
description of an echinoderm from a hydrothermal environment. The gen
us is characterized by unique oral and dental features. Examination of
post-larvae and juveniles allows the ontogeny of these features to be
assessed and compared with related genera in the sub-family.
