Abstract
A continuous fuzzy group is a fuzzy group with continuous membership f unction on a topological group. We show that if a nontrivial continuou s fuzzy group exists then the underlying topological group must be tot ally disconnected. It is also shown that all locally compact totally d isconnected groups are carriers for nontrivial fuzzy groups. More deta iled results are obtained for compact groups.
