A study of variety discrimination in the faba bean (Vicia faba L.) is
presented, in which established methods using visual assessment of pla
nt morphology were compared with computerized image analysis of leafle
ts and a biochemical analysis of seed storage protein composition by e
lectrophoresis. Bulked seed samples were used to characterise seed pro
teins. Tests confirmed that an integrated system using the three metho
ds was able to distinguish a subset of 12 varieties.
