Cytokines and growth factors act as intercellular signalling molecules
which control cellular functions during development and in response t
o injury or infection. The epidermal growth factor (EGF) family is an
expanding group of structurally related polypeptides that regulate cel
l proliferation, migration and differentiation, via tyrosine kinase re
ceptors on target cells. This chapter reviews recent developments in t
he characterization of EGF family members and their receptors.
