It has been established by X-ray structural analysis that pure alpha-d
iphenylphosphoryl-alpha-acetylacetonitrile exists in the enol form (a
Z isomer). In crystals, a strong intramolecular P=O...H...O hydrogen b
ond is formed; the O...O distance is 2.551 Angstrom. It has been demon
strated that the H atom is characterized by a high lability along the
hydrogen bond, which exhibits a covalent component in the H...O region
.
