As systems become more heavily loaded, nonlinearities play an increasi
ngly important role in power system behavior. Modeling must accurately
reflect component and system response. Analysis tools should continue
to work reliably, even under extreme system conditions, providing acc
urate predictions of system behavior. The paper considers some power s
ystem modeling issues and presents an overview of the source of nonlin
earities in power systems. It then considers industry accepted analysi
s techniques, as well as those techniques that are more research orien
tated. The in influence of nonlinearities on these tools is explored.
