We report the detection in the visible of the companion of the FU Orio
nis star Z Canis Majoris discovered in the infrared by Koresko et al.
(1991). At 730 nm and 656 nm, the companion of Z CMa appears to be muc
h brighter than predicted by the model of Koresko et al. (1991). We ar
gue that the excess flux in the visible is due to scattered light from
the companion. This interpretation agrees with the results of the spe
ctropolarimetric study of the Z CMa system by Whitney et al. (1993).
