The pyrolysis of poly(methylchlorosilanes) prepared by catalytic dispr
oportionation of disilanes leads to the formation of silicon carbide.
The first step of the process is a polysilane to polycarbosilane trans
formation, which occurs with the insertion of methylene groups into Si
-Si bonds. For the first time, this transformation was studied by C-13
MAS-NMR, using cross polarization (CP) and Inversion Recovery Cross P
olarization (IRCP) techniques.
