Abstract
Carbon 13 NMR constitutes a potent tool to study cellular metabolism b y the use of C-13 enriched substrates. Analyzes of C-13 NMR spectra re corded from acidic cell extracts lead to the evaluation of specific en richment of various metabolites. On the other hand, the measure of hom onuclear C-13-C-13 Spin coupling gives information on the different is otopomers for a given molecule. Mathematical models were developed to interpret the NMR data in terms of metabolic fluxes through the metabo lic nework of interest. Various models established in our laboratoty a re presented. These models were applied to metabolic studies of cultur ed central nervous system cells as rat cerebellar astrocytes and granu le cells, and the C6 glioma cell line.
