Silver halide sensitized gelatin (SHSG) has proven to be a good altern
ative to dichromated gelatin and bleached emulsions in the production
of volume phase holographic optical elements, In the present paper, th
e processing procedure for SHSG derived from Agfa-Gevaert holographic
plates is reviewed and the holographic characteristics of the processe
d SHSG are experimentally measured and analysed, Several important asp
ects related to the influence of the developer and the bleach bath, th
e noise, the diffraction efficiency, the modulation transfer function
and the optimized procedure have been considered, Both transmission an
d reflection holographic gratings and diffuse-object holograms are des
cribed in detail.
