Abstract
Ultrasonic velocities and densities of glycerol and sorbitol in aqueou s alkali halide solutions of different concentrations at 308 K have be en measured. The values of adiabatic compressibility (K-s), apparent m olar volume ((phi(v)), apparent molar compressibility (phi K-s) and hy dration number (H-n) have been deduced from density and ultrasonic vel ocity data. Results show that: (i) there are short range and weak inte ractions in the present ternary systems, (ii) ions such as Na+, K+, Cl -, Br- are structure makers (SM) in both glycerol and sorbitol in the order Na+ > K+ > Cl- > Br- > I-, while I- is structure breaker (SB).
