METALLURGICAL INVESTIGATION OF EMBRITTLEM ENT PHENOMENA RELATED TO WELDING ON SHEET PRODUCTION LINES

Weld quality in the butt welding of coils on cold rolled sheet product ion lines has a strong influence on line productivity and final produc t quality. Investigations carried out jointly by the CRDM laboratory a nd the production staff have as objective to increase the reliability of these welding operations. A methodology is presented, which helps t o solve possible weldability problems. It is applied to two practical cases : the prevention of fracture after flash butt welding of IF stee l coils, and the reduction of welding overthickness on seam welding of packaging steel coils.
