In 157 men with stage I-II essential hypertension the degree of left v
entricular hypertrophy was correlated with plasma renin activity, conc
entration of adrenaline, noradrenaline, triiodothyronine, and thyroxin
e. No significant correlations were found between left ventricular myo
cardial mass index and plasma renin activity at rest and after walking
, concentration of adrenaline and noradrenaline, hydrocortisone and th
yroxine. But there was close positive correlation between left ventric
ular myocardial mass index and plasma aldosterons concentration (r=0.6
2, p<0.001). the results indicated that plasma aldosterone concentrati
on could be an important humoral factor of development of myocardial h
ypertrophy in essential hypertension.
