The formation of nanosized particles of a CdyZn1-yS solid solution is
described with equimolar or in the presence of an excess of sulfide io
ns. The CdyZn1-yS crystallites are characterized by an absorption spec
trum and excitonic peak which are red shifted by increasing the size o
f the particles. The particles are well crystallized with a lattice pa
rameter depending on the composition, y. The size of the CdyZn1-yS par
ticle is governed by the size of the water droplets and does not depen
d on the composition, y. In the presence of an excess of cations, CdS
particles are preferentially formed because of a faster nucleation of
CdS than ZnS.
