The care for environment and the wish to develop non alimentary vegeta
ble oils uses led us, in this study, on the one hand to substitute alk
yd drying oils, generally used in the printing industry (linseed) by r
apeseed or sunflower alkyds, and, on the other hand, to use methylic e
sters from these oils as diluents in the formulation of heatset inks.
The result is that the oil drying character has no influence on the us
e of these alkyds in offset inks formulations, but that methylic ester
s viscosity reducing character, as well as varnishes inner cohesion en
gendered by that kind of diluent does not allow to realize a simple su
bstitution. As a matter of fact, it is essential to review the formula
tions from the basis, to allow the use of methylic esters in this kind
of application.
