In a three months old female infant with soft tissue swellings and the
refore suspected nephrotic syndrome an urinary tract infection was dia
gnosed and successfully treated with antibiotics. However, fever and t
he signs of inflammation persisted, Bone szintigraphy, performed to ex
clude osteomyelitis, showed intensive activities over the facial skull
, the ribs, forearms and pelvis. Skull X-ray showed the typical bony c
hanges of the infantile cortical hyperostosis. Infantile cortical hype
rostosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of unclear
soft tissue swelling in infants.
