An anti-microbial substance in tile mandibular gland of L. fuliginosus
was identified as 3-formyl-7,11- dimerhyl-(2E,6Z,10)-dodecarrien-1-al
. This substance inhibited the germination of spores of plant pathogen
s such as Colletotrichum lagenarium, Fusarium oxysporum SCHLECHTENDAHL
, Gibberella fujikuroi SAW. WR., Pestulotia longiseta, Pyricularia ory
zae CAVARA, Verticillum dahliae, and of insect pathogens such as Metar
hizium anisopliae F126, Beaweria bassiana F18, Paecilomyces fumosorose
us 522: Verticillium lecanii F126. Moreover, it also inhibited the gro
wth of gram positive and gram negative bacteria. Comparison with dendr
olasin, farnesal, and farnesol suggested that the structure of the dia
ldehyde double bond contributes to the antimicrobial activity.
