Abstract
Data on the elemental composition (TOC, N, P, S, Si, Al and Fe) of muc ilaginous macroaggregates collected in the northern Adriatic sea are r eported and compared with previous available results and factors respo nsible for triggering massive mucilage occurrences are discussed and t he different hypotheses proposed are examined critically to explain th eir formation.
