Abstract
The occurrence of 2-nitrofluoranthene and 2-nitropyrene of photochemic al origin in atmospheric particulate matter collected worldwide was in vestigated. Compelling evidence is provided of their ubiquitous presen ce in the low troposphere. The low values of the 2-nitrofluoranthene/2 -nitropyrene ratios that were measured seem to prove that daytime OH-r adical-initiated reactions are mainly responsible for their formation.
