A simple pi pi, (K) over bar K, and rho rho(omega omega) fully coupled
channel model proposed to predict the isoscalar S-wave phase shifts a
nd inelasticities for pi pi scattering in the 1.0 to 2.0 GeV region. T
he S-matrix is required to exhibit poles corresponding to the establis
hed isoscalar J(pi) = 0(+) resonances f(0)(975), f(0)(1400), and f(0)(
1710). A dominant feature of the experimental pi pi inelasticity is th
e clear opening of the (K) over bar K channel near 1 GeV, and the open
ing of another channel in the 1.4-1.5GeV region. The success of our mo
del in predicting this observed dramatic energy dependence indicates t
hat the effect of multipion channels is adequately described by the pi
pi coupling to the (K) over bar K channel, the rho rho(4 pi) and omeg
a omega(6 pi) channels.
